 Review 1
One of the few pianists to succesfully master Bud Powell's achivements. Walter Davis, Jr. became an important pianist/composer for several editions of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and on pivotal recordings by Art Taylor, Donald Byrd, and Jackie McLean among others.

Davis Cup is his debut as a leader and, given the quality and variety of the writing and playing on this 1959 date, it's a shame that he remained so under recorded throughout his life. This is the pure Blue Note sound with Donald Byrd and Jackie McLean in peak form.

Recorded on August 2, 1959 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.
Donald Byrd - Trumpet
Jackie McLean - Alto Sax
Walter Davis, Jr. - Piano
